GLOBAL CHALLENGES - LOCAL SOLUTIONS using SMARTS

Food Supply
By 2050 the world will need to feed 9 billion people. In other words, the demand for food will be 60% greater than it is today and 40% of the world’s landmass is arid, and reported rising temperatures will turn even more of it into desert. At current rates, the amount of food we’re growing today will feed only half of the population. One third of agriculture lies in water-stressed regions. In the year 2050 we’ll need twice as much water, and crops like hemp are an efficient user of water and are one of the few crops which are a complete protein which can be harvested in 12 weeks.

Housing Crisis
Demand for housing globally Countries around the world are experiencing a housing shortage that has left millions of people homeless. 3 billion people will need access to adequate housing by 2030, UN-Habitat says. The main causes of this major crisis are a depleted Labor market, shortages of construction materials and worsening effects of climate change. Globally The U.S. needs 6.5 million homes, the U.K. needs 4.3 million homes, and Australia has a 1.2m million home target over the next 5 years. The rising cost of materials combined with supply chain constraints, the war in Ukraine and deforestation bans ( like in Australia) have placed significant upward pressure on raw materials’ crops like hemp can reduce the lead times from decades ( for plantations) to just 12 weeks, whilst regenerating the soil. The fire and termite resistance of a material like hemp can greatly assist with urban environmental integration in fire prone areas like the most recent events in Australia and the U.S. With our partnership with HEXCORE, Wandarra will play an ever-increasing role in the building material landscape.

Climate Target
Australia’s current emissions reduction targets commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 43% below 2005 levels by 2030, with an indicative value of 4381 million tonnes CO2-e, corresponding to the 43% target. The target means that figure needs to fall to 352 million tonnes by 2030, of which 1.2 m homes built using hemp could add 34m MT CO2 so almost 10% of that target.

Single Use Plastic
In 2021-22, Australia generated approximately 6.98 million tonnes of packaging waste ( vs globally 400million tonnes) , of which plastic packaging accounted for 18.3% of the total packaging waste, with only 6.6% successfully recovered. Overall, 44% of the packaging waste was disposed of in landfills, which is consistent with global averages. With our Partnership with PAPACKS sustainable fibre compostable packaging we effectively replace much of this inert land fill and develop a circular economy

SMARTS
We’ve developed the integration of sustainable materials and nutrition transformation systems addressing these global challenges, by combining eco-friendly material innovations with advanced, efficient, and sustainable production systems, Wandarra delivers on these challenges using our SMARTS (Sustainable Materials and Regenerative Transformation Systems) .
