- Why Hemp
Global Industrial Hemp Demand
Global demand for industrial hemp is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 17.1% to $16.75B USD from 2023 to 2030. This growth is driven by the rising demand for industrial hemp from applications across industries such as, construction, textiles, food & beverage, personal care and animal care across the globe.
With its fast growth seed to product period of 90-150 days and significant biomass yield, hemp enables efficient use of agricultural land. Asia Pacific led by Australia has been identified as one of the largest industrial hemp growing regions in the world.
Rapid Growth of Hemp Plants
Hemp plants grow rapidly – as much as 10 cm in a day at their peak – and an achieve a height of 5 m in as many months. Some experts say that hemp plants are more like fast-growing trees than conventional crop plants.
With 100 plants per m2, each ha sequesters 6 MT of carbon, fixed from 22 MT of carbon dioxide in less than 5 months. The makes them more efficient at sequestering of atmospheric carbon than any other crop we know of.
Hemp Plant's Remarkable Versatilty
- The fibres in the stem are the longest and strongest known in nature. They have to be strong to support that 5 m tall, 2 cm thick stem.
- The core of the stem, the pith or hurd, is light and strong: it allows the tall, thin stem to flex without breaking. The grain of the hemp plant is a source of top-quality nutritional products and edible oil.
